I think it was my PSU blowing that's giving me issues with my current PC, hence the recent desire to get a new system.

My issue is this:

I turn the PC on, the base unit gives me 9 beeps and the monitor stays black!

Changed monitor, graphic card, psu and I'm still having the same issue, looked at the ram modules as well, ............ I think my motherboard took a hit when the PSU went bang.

Thus I have ordered a new system tonight, total cost about £900

Here's the spec I went for!

Antec Nine Hundred - Advanced Gaming Case
Corsair 750Watt PSU
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3
AMD Phenom™ II 940 Quad-Core 3GHz 8MB Cache
Coolermaster Hyper TX2 Fan
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz
500GB 7200RPM SATA II
1TB 7200RPM SATA II
Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD RW Black SATA
Sapphire ATI Radeon 4870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium (64-bit)
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio
2 Year Return to Base Warranty with Free Collect & Return

I went with AMD Quad core in the end, realise games aren't using the capability yet but makes the system a little future proof, its gonna have to last me about 3 years.

Didn't fancy the whole RAID 0 thing cos that can endanger both the hard drives. If one goes the data can be lost from both............. although maybe I'm a little bit paranoid?!

Followed the advice and dropped the extra ram, added the sound card instead!

I'm hoping the graphic card wont be too noisy, the case comes with lots of fans so it should run quite cool! :)

Any views on my final decision?

SK

looks perfect to me :D
tho with 64bit vista home premium you can run 4x2gb ram so an upgrade will be cheap if you ever need any more.
vista ultimate 64bit supports 32mb 4x8mb ram lol. overkill there

what make was the old mobo? have a look on the internet and see if the post beep code relates to anything fixable.

Beep code (9) indicate a graph card issue, I think there is a problem with the mobo interface in the graphic card area!

lewl, yes there is.

SPCR {l Wrote}:

The Nexus Value 430 makes a bold leap to the very top of our quiet PSU rankings. It is the quietest fan-cooled PSU we've yet tested, by a 2-3 decibel margin, the closest being the Enermax Modu 82+ 425W at around 13 dBA, the Seasonic M12D-850W at 14 dBA and the Antec Signature 650 at 15 dBA. At such vanishingly quiet levels, this is no mean feat. That it is achieved by a modest, unassuming product with a name like Value 430 is even more surprising, especially when you consider that the other top contenders are high end models from giants in the power supply field. It even begs the question of why you'd pay big bucks for a fanless PSU of similar power rating.

The maximum SPL of 19 dBA@1m is, again, amazingly quiet. It bests the very quietest competitors at ~400W load by a fairly big margin, something like 5~8 dBA. Despite the the relatively modest 15°C temperature rise thorugh the PSU, one can't help thinking that such low airflow must surely shorten its useful life. On the other hand, most system with which this PSU will be used will not draw anything near its rated power at any time. Keep the power draw to under 300W, and you'll probably be quite safe. With the pace of change in computer technology, it's likely the PC will be considered obsolete before the PSU fails.

Electrically, while the Value 430 is not exceptional (compared to the high-tech, pricier competition), it is no slouch. Our sample had no obvious weaknesses. Don't ask of it what it cannot deliver, and it should provide fine power delivery for most midrange systems.

For the card-carrying, faithful SPCR party member, this Nexus has to be something of an affirmation. Most PC enthusiasts do not run dual-video card behemoths that demand a kilowatt. Even with a high performance graphics card, a typical modern dual/quad core CPU system with lots of RAM and a couple of hard drives will not demand more power than the Value 430 can deliver. (See the idle and full load power demand of various systems profiled on page four of Power Supply Fundamentals.) For the noise, energy and value conscious power user, it's a perfect balance: Virtual silence, low enough energy use, adequate power, and a very friendly $80 price tag.

There can be overkill in price, and there can be overkill in buying a PSU with more max output than will be used - running a 1KW PSU will cost you way more in elec bill than a nice little 500w.
It's just a myth perpetrated by advertising that you need a large rated PSU, as the above review shows.

If you already have an operating system on there you can upgrade from,........... and it's only an evaluation copy until April 2010.

I will have enough hassle sorting out what I want on it without thinking of the basics! LOL

lol eachann, thats a review, reviews should be looked at sceptically, as all are just someone,s opinion, which if you read a lot you will see they are all different one,s, so who is right?. Indeed you got it!!! it;s the one "you think is right", which is why i went for more power cos last one blew. 500w is on the border line. as in it's just adequate.

Also there is a few with problems with windows 7 , with programs not working, if you d/l stuff you will have seen this.

nice system jason.

if you have a 1000w psu it will only use what it needs to run the componemts. if you have a maximum total drain on the 1000w psu of say 600w. that is all it will use not the whole 1000w its not like a light bulb lol
anyways, a 1000w psu would probably only be worth getting if you were running a high end pc. pentium quadcore, 2 or 3 top grafix cards, 4+ HDD. the more you plug in to it, the more you need. also consider usb addons, i have usb mouse, keyboard(uses 2 usb) 2 usb external HDDs, xbox360 pad, creative zen and a creative xfi elite pro always connected to my pc so i need a fair amount of power.
