A new pc, what components would you use?

AMD?
Intel?

I'm looking at a new build and would like a few recommendations,..............

:)

personally i would go for amd, intels run so hot nowdays.
quadcores arent as good for gaming as dualcores but more games are now working well with quadcore.
i use 8gb ram (4x2gb dualchannel) with 64bit vista ultimate and i still never had more than 4-5gb ram in use at one time
i tried SLI before and it works well, theres never a strain on your grafix cards but single card works as well. and the cash you would save would get you a great soundcard.
2x500gb hdd sata2 in raid0 would be great. these guys will set it up for you free.

Thanks Wavy, didn't consider the amd chipset yet!
Will take a look at that as well!

OK, how does this look to people?

iBUILD™ Intel SLi Gaming PC Performance,
Premium ATX Midi Tower Case I never trust nonbranded cases, usually cheaply built with poor airflow
Corsair 750Watt PSU, Great PSU, you can trust Corsair 100%, I have their hx520w model. 700w is overkill though. 500w would be more than adiquate for this build.
ASUS P5N-D, decent mobo
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q8400 Quad Core 4x2.66GHz 4MB Cache, decent quadcore, unless you often run multiple games/CPU intensive apps then save £££ and get a dualcore, something like the e7400 or the e8400. Wavy said to get an AMD cause they run cooler, well I'm not sure about that but if you get an AM2+ or and AM3 socket mobo, you can upgrade later on with ease, whereas you'd need a whole new motherboard to upgrade to Intel's flagship Core i7 or i5. I can't recommend you any boards or AMD processors though cause I've not been paying attention to their stuff lately
Coolermaster Hyper TX2 Fan meh, no idea about this. I'd get a Thermalright or Zerotherm if possible
Corsair XMS2 8GB (4x2GB) DDR2 800MHz, Overkill. I doubt very very much you could use 8GB. Save money and get 4
320GB 7200RPM SATA II,
1TB 7200RPM SATA II, Find out who the manufacturer is. I usually only trust Samsung or Western Digital, although the new Hitachi drives have very good benchies.
Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD RW Black SATA,
2 x nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1GB in SLi mode, The 9800GT is built on old architecture and isn't a great card. Wouldn't bother with SLI tbh, save on power consumption, heat and noise and get a single card. Geforce GTX260s are very quiet and can be found for good prices at the moment. Radeon 4870 1GB is good choice too.
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium (64-bit), I've never paid for a copy of windows :)
Built-in audio, With the money saved by my above recommendations, consider a soundcard. It'll help you out using sound in game. A lot.

If my parents ISP wasn't so slow I'd post a recommendation of my own to build yourself but if you want prebuilt, Scan.co.uk do really good custom 3XS builds. Check them out.

OK, how about this one?
LOL

iBUILD™ AMD Gaming PC Performance,
Antec Nine Hundred - Advanced Gaming Case,

Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3,
AMD Athlon 7850+ X2 Dual Core 2.8GHz 3MB Cache,
Coolermaster Hyper TX2 Fan,
Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz,
500GB 7200RPM SATA II,
1TB 7200RPM SATA II,
Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD RW Black SATA,
Sapphire ATI Radeon 4870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express,
Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium (64-bit),

the case is good, i used this very one before. my daughter has it now. but a decent thermaltake case or the like is better.

500w is really no good for running SLI, nvidia 8800gtx cards use 185w eack, a quadcore uses 195w, add your mobo drives and all usb etc. i have the 750w corsair and the only thing i didnt like with it was you couldnt disconnect unused power cables to keep the case tidy.

most new amd mobos are am2+ and am3 compatable now. mine is. my cpu is a amd 6000+ dualcore @3.01ghz. will run any game now and if i choose to upgrade to am3, i only need the cpu.
SLi wont improve the cards performance but it will take the strain and split it between both cards, improves card lifespan etc. really power hungry tho.
HHd - maxtor are good, samsung and wertern digital are better but the difference aint that noticable

WTF, i never got this, you spend all that money building a decent pc and put some *free dodgy operating system on it  its the pricee of a few decent games for peace of mind lol

a decent creative soundcard new is around £100, on ebay you can get one for £40-£50. definately a must for gaming. the difference is phenominal and frees up the cpu.

I could happily run a quadcore off a good brand 520w PSU. Don't believe the marketing bumf when it comes to PSU, 750w IS overkill for that. Besides, originally I meant 750w being overkill for the build I was recommending. Also, power consumptions has gone down on a lot of cards since 8800GTX IIRC.

My copies of windows have never been dodgy. If you look in the right places you find completely stable OS releases.

Aaaanyway, SK, how much did they want for that last build?
