ok, who knows anything about this ?

Today i got a quote for CCTV at our unit, we dont have a landline/internet and dont intend on getting it. But ya can get a 3G router that takes a sim card (PAYG sim or Contract) and ya plug that into a DVR (500 gig) and yer all good to go, a few wires, a sensor and a quick setup and ya can get alerted when the motion sensor gets triggered and it'll send a 5/10 second video clip to yer mobile phone of what exactly triggered the motion sensor.

This new 3G router is news to me, anyone else have any knowledge before we buy our kit ?

Thanks a lot in advance, as this gunna be a VERY worthwhile investment !

Never heard of such tech until now but sounds like a good idea to me, i would do some research before making your mind up on if to get it or not, no doubt there will be reviews online for such products out there like this.

There's a lot of cheap crap out there... i had a look a few years back and tried a system which was supposed to be able to send signals back to the recorder without wires..wora lora tosh. back to the shop it went.
If your going to spend money on a cctv system go to a shop and get a demo of what your looking for from them. Also make sure you get one with a few years warranty on the product you only get what you pay for.
Sends pics to your phone?.... i think you'll find the res in the pictures will be very low you cant actually make out any distinctive features on the person you see. I would also get one of the cameras that are vandal proof..ie they don't break when hit with the odd brick or two. these also offer lenses you can change which a relatively cheap to do.

What your looking at is a investment for the buisiness don't buy crap.

you need a 3g modem + router if you want to see whats on the cctv live otherwise just patch it on to a hard drive, also use a camera that starts to record when it sense something, most of them got that feature... i can write more later if you want.

p.s. i work with this now :)

You need to take in to account the signal strength in your unit as well. Are you in one of those metal boxes? At our place our CCTV, burglar alarm and fire alarm systems use DualCom (landline and 3g combined), so if one fails it tries the other.
Insurance companies love it.

I think I saw a system similar to the one you posted about on the gadget show and I've seen others on teh internetz where you build up a wireless network of cameras that talk to a central unit that has a sim card inside. I have no idea how reliable these things are but they've been about for a few years but always seemed aimed at the consumer market rather than businesses.

Personally, for a business, I'd get the landline installed and go for a decent dualcom system.
Landlines from O2 Business are cheap - we are switching ours over to them at the moment.
Might be worth checking with your insurance company to see what discounts they will give too.
