RIGHT.....
I upgraded to Windows 8 and I can definitely recommend it. It took me a week or so to get used to the new start menu and charms interface but once you get in the swing of it it's really no problem.
The major improvements over Windows 7 are speed and memory usage. Average RAM usage is 22% lower with Windows 8 than Windows 7 and overall the whole OS is faster, especially noticeable at boot up and shut down.
I have found that my old Windows XP games run better under Windows 8 than they did with 7. The compatibility troubleshooter seems much better at getting the right settings for legacy applications.
There are some nice touches for to Windows explorer - there is a new ribbon interface instead of the old toolbars with some good features. Worth playing with if you do lot of file management stuff.
For backups, there is the new file history feature that keeps an offline copy of your files on a USB or network HDD if you have one. Very simple to setup and easy to access previous versions of documents through a little icon on the ribbon in explorer.
For parents, I found the family safety controls very good. I can set time limits and curfews for my kids without needing to dick about with third party software and the web filter seems perfectly adequate so far.
I have a Windows Phone, so I was used to the live tiles and 'swipey wipey' interface. I like the People app, it keeps in sync with my phone nicely. I log into the PC with my microsoft account, so I have Skype, messenger, facebook, twitter and linkedin syncing automatically with the People app.
The new style apps from the app store are nice too. Very clean and simple layout.
I now need to save up for a touchscreen monitor to get the best out of it but don't let that put you off an upgrade.
P.S. Security is 'better' than Windows 7 too. They have tweaked the kernel of the OS to be better protected. Still not perfect but NO operating system is. All have weaknesses and malware.
My upgrade ran very smoothly except for one issue, my old Diamondback Mouse. I kept getting a black screen during the install. I unplugged the mouse and it upgraded. Plugged the mouse back in and I was away. No problems since.
Maintaining SSD-inc involves a lot of time and money. Help us by behaving nicely!
